Mehndi

The Mehndi ceremony is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich pre-wedding events. Henna (mehndi) is applied to the bride’s hands, arms, and feet, often in intricate patterns featuring symbols of love and fertility. The ritual is believed to bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity to the couple’s married life. A popular belief holds that the darker the henna stain, the deeper the love between the couple—and the stronger the bond with the mother-in-law!

Though anyone is welcome to join, mostly female friends and relatives have designs applied too. It’s a fun, laid-back gathering that sets the tone for the wedding celebrations to follow.

Late morning

Godh Bharai & Tilak

Early evening

Goad Bharai (filling the lap) is a preliminary acceptance ceremony, where the groom’s family formally visits the bride’s home to bless and accept the bride. It signifies that both families have mutually agreed to the alliance and are committed to proceeding with wedding arrangements.

Each member of Groom’s family will personally meet the bride one at a time and wish her well. They might also shower her with small gifts or feed her sweets and dry fruits.

The Tilak Ceremony is a formal pre-wedding ritual performed by the bride’s family to bless and accept the groom as their chosen son-in-law. Traditionally associated with honor, trust, and alliance, the Tilak marks a symbolic assurance that the bride’s family is fully supportive of the marriage.

Bride’s brother applies vermilion (tilak) on the groom’s forehead. Bride’s brother offers gifts, garments, sweets, and dry fruits to groom/ their family. The ceremony is followed by a small puja (prayer) performed by the priest.

Sangeet

The Sangeet is a joyous celebration that literally means “music.” The event is symbolic of the union of two families and allows everyone to come together in a relaxed, festive environment. It strengthens bonds, fosters camaraderie, and allows families to showcase their joy through performance and music.

Family members and friends prepare group dances, solo performances, musical numbers, and sometimes even comedy skits. Choreography is often rehearsed in advance, and the atmosphere is like a mini concert or party. The venue is usually decorated with bright colors, lighting, and sometimes a stage.
